Let’s shake things up with Halo-halo!

I grew up having halo-halo and other iced desserts like saging con yelo and mais con yelo, as these were sold along our street at a very cheap price. My grandmother also used to make this dessert for merienda as a reward for taking our siesta (or the afternoon nap). In a tropical country like the Philippines, this shaved ice snack is often considered more famous during the summer months, but the truth is, it knows no season!

What is Halo-halo?

Halo-halo is a simple dessert that is very easy to make! You just have to gather all the necessary ingredients which are often sold canned or in bottled containers. These ingredients include colorful gulaman (or gelatin), nata de coco, kaong, monggo beans, pinipig, sago, macapuno and even banana mixed in with shaved ice.

To make it even more special, you can opt to top it with a scoop of ube or vanilla ice cream, or go with a spoon of ube jam together with a slice of leche flan. Of course, don’t forget to drizzle some evaporated milk or condensed milk.

Did I get you craving for some because of the ingredients? Don’t worry! If you’re pressed for time and can’t make some, you can always have some halo-halo delivered right to your doorstep! Here’s a list of restaurants that you can order your halo-halo fix from:
